What is LEGACY?

LEGACY stands for (Leadership Empowerment Growth Achievement Comes from our Youth) and has developed programs to address the problems of illiteracy, youth violence and childhood obesity and strives to eliminate obstacles affecting today’s urban youth by providing mentorship, developing creativity, training and supportive services that will enable them to be outstanding leaders of tomorrow.  LEGACY will not be for all students, but we will be a resource for all students in which we serve.  We will provide information on other programs available to students. LEGACY is a movement to save our youth. LEGACY is a 501(c)(3) organization.

Our Mission

To teach urban youth how to handle the responsibilities of being an effective leader in a church, family, school, community, and corporate by providing them with the resources and life skills needed to be a leader of today and well into the future.

Our Vision

To develop a society of urban youth with the leadership skills necessary to be outstanding leaders of tomorrow.

Our Approach

To ensure we accomplish this task, we will follow key components set forth by our founder:

  • Increase literacy.
  • Increase high school graduation rate
  • Increase transition from College to Corporate/Entrepreneurship.
  • Teach how to handle stress and the challenges of daily life.
  • Provide training in communication, decision-making, problem-solving, time management, financial responsibility and project management.
  • Develop a product/service that will benefit society and create a self-sustaining program
  • Partner with organizations/corporations and community/corporate leaders to provide career path guidance and identify resources to ensure the success of the program.

LEGACY’s Tutoring/Mentoring Program

In the past, we have partnered with PACES (Wyandotte Mental Health) to tutor/mentor students K-12 in subjects like algebra, reading, theater, and music. We are very proud of the success of this program.  With the help of LEGACY’s tutoring program, we witnessed some students’ grades increase by two letter grades.

LEGACY’s Arts/Theater Youth Program

LEGACY’s Arts/Theater Youth Program is a production course designed to equip students, ages 11 -18, with the skills necessary to put on a full production. LEGACY students will complete modules in subjects such as drama, comedy, set design, costume design, community service, civic engagement, and lifestyle choices. LEGACY’s Arts/Theater Youth Program will give students a unique opportunity to obtain advice and assistance from LEGACY staff and volunteers as well as guest speakers and presenters who are highly respected in the arts’ community.  Arts/Theater Youth Program will use similar leadership, social development and mentoring concepts from the Leadership program. The students will have an end-of-summer performance.  This will be open to the public and will allow our students to showcase their talent as well as display conflict resolution through the arts.

LEGACY’s Arts/Theater Youth Program is a summer program that will give our children an upper hand in preparing them for their future.

LEGACY™’s Leadership Program

This program is a 36 week program that will give our children an upper hand in preparing them for their future.  We will discuss:

  • College and its benefits; what the students should research when looking for a college.
  • Different options after high school whether it is college, trade school, or straight to work.
  • The importance of selling yourself through the resume process and why it is important to write a resume as well as how to do so.
  • When a resume is appropriate and when it is not.
  • We will conduct mock interviews, so the students will know what interviews in the “real world” are actually like (It is imperative for students to understand how to dress during such an interview and when they begin working).
  • A course on business etiquette (In this course, we will show the students how they should conduct themselves in the work environment. Regardless of where it is you work, there is always a time and a place for everything).
  • Money and time management (The students need to understand being on time is actually being late and being early is being on time. When working and even in school, every second of the day is crucial. You will never get that second back. The importance of balancing your money and not spending it all at once is a phase every person goes through at a young age. Our plan is to show the students a budget in which responsibilities are already subtracted from the equation so that students can see how much money they may actually have to live off of one day).
  • Develop a community service project in which the students can give back to their community (We do not wish to produce citizens that are afraid of their environment. We want our children to be proud of where they came from. If in case it is an impoverished area that you reside, what can you do for that community to change things around? Or we will develop a product/service that will benefit society and create a self-sustaining program to teach students entrepreneurship).  In either project the students will develop project management skills.
